NEW CANADIAN FOOD LABEL REQUIREMENTS
DEADLINE: DecEMBER 14, 2021

Changes to Canadian food labelling regulation announced in December 2016 become mandatory December 2021. All food labels must meet the new requirements related to nutrition facts tables, list of ingredients and sugar information.

CHANGES TO NUTRITION FACTS TABLE

The Canadian nutrition facts table has been modified in appearance and content:

  • Serving Size

  • Percentage daily value calculations

  • Percentage daily value for sugar added

  • Potassium added

  • Vitamins A & C removed

  • Amount in mg for potassium, calcium & iron

  • Added footnote about percentage daily values

CHANGES TO THE LIST OF INGREDIENTS

Changes to the list of ingredients include:

  • Grouping all sugar ingredients in brackets after the name "Sugar"

  • Listing all food colouring by their individual common names

  • Text must be black on white or neutral background

  • Updated minimum type height requirements

  • Use of bullets or commas to separate ingredients

  • Use of both upper and lower case letters for the list of ingredients

CHANGES TO SUGAR INFORMATIOM

Changes to the manner in which sugar is represented apply to both the nutrition facts table and the list of ingredients.

SUGAR in the Nutrition facts table

Percentage daily value for total sugar has been added.

SUGAR IN THE LIST OF INGREDIENTS

Sugar based ingredients must be grouped in grouped in brackets in descending order by weight after the name 'sugars'.
